Introductions: Officers present: President Brian Flatgard, Secretary Victoria Avella.

Attendees: Great parent turn out. There were about 32 parents in attendence.

Secretary’s report: Victoria Avella. available online.

Treasurer’s Report: Lisa Callarman. Read by Brian. All seems to be in order. We are maintaining a profit. Any questions do not hesitate to contact one of the officers.

Recaps:

Fresh and Easy receipts: Kathryn Leonard. As of the meeting $475 had been collected. All receipts are in and we should have a grand total at the next meeting.

Butter Braid and Laughing Giraffe Organic Treats: very successful. Collected about $800.

Holiday Programme and DVD orders. The DVD will be ready soon. The editing is very good. Thanks to Kelly Loucks and Amy Mc Pherson.

Recurring findraising:

Grocery shopping: Safeway, Albertsons, Osco, Fry’s. All accessable on the website: KhalsaPTO.org

eScrip and Amazon. Also found on the website under fundraising.

Box Tops for Education. Keep collecting. Collection boxes are at both the Primary and Elementary campuses. So far raised $300.

Do not forget about the Jamba Juice cards.

Upcoming Events:

Fat Man’s Pass Hike: January 14th. Brian reported that there was a great turn out. About 100!….

Spring Carnival: Saturday, March 3, 2012.

Yearbooks: May

Year-end 40th Anniversary extravaganza picnic: June. This year will be special due to the 40th Anniversary.

Administration Report: Donna Waters. Congratulated the khlasa community for a great Holiday Programme. As teachers and parents we are always so proud of all the children. They themselves should also be very proud.

The tax credit was a great success. The school will receive around $20,000. Thank you so much. This will be able to be used in the classrooms.

Lead Teacher Presentation: Lori Lasota

Lori talks about the importance of self awareness amongst the children, that they are aware of what they are capable of.

Lori, likes to ask the students: ” Did you do the best work?”. It is important to help the children understand that everyday it is important to do the best work they can. It is not the amount of work but the quality of the work that is important. It is also important for them to challenge themsleves and hold themselves accountable for the work. As parents we can look at their work record. Ask them questions. As parents, it is important that we go into the classroom to observe. This will show them that we are interested in what they are doing, check in with them, show them that we care.

Our Mission: To enhance the delivery of excellence in education while cultivating the community of Khalsa Montessori School.

The parent turnout was fantastic. Atleast 70 parents. While childcare is provided please remember to sign in your children. Also each parent can  sign in before the meeting and also provide their Email address.

Brian solicits for additional agenda items.

Secretary’s Report: Victoria Avella. This year these will be able for all parents to review on the PTO website. We understand that as parents we get busy and may not be able to attend every meeting. This is why it is important to keep updated on the website.

Treasurer’s Report: Provided by Brian. Current balance: $13,893.26. Reduce this by the prior year’s teacher dusbursements: -$5079.39. Reduce this amount by $2000 for this year’s working capital.

Total amount: $6813.87. Divide this amount by half. This is then divided into 8 classrooms $425.87. The other half is divided by the amount of students 210, which comes out to $16.22 student.

The new treasurer was elected. We are delighted to announce that Lisa Callarman will be this year’s treasurer. Any questions or concerns do not hesitate to contact her.

Upcoming year event overviews:

Candle sales: Coordinator: Victoria Avella. Packets will be distributed in your folders October 14th. You will have until November 1st to order. Great for the holidays.

Parent/ Teacher Mixer and Silent auction: Coordinators: Keely Varvel Hartsell, John and Tara Collison. Wednesday October 12th, 6-8pm. Location: Valley Garden Center. This will be a wonderful, relaxing event. Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Khalsa. Childcare is provided.

Silent Auction: Coordinator: Dawn Baumgartner. Donate an item for the silent auction by October 10th. Bidding will start that night at 10pm and run through the evening of October 12th while at the Mixer.

Volunteers are needed for this event. Please contact the coordinators if you wish to help. This could be as simple as filling folders to decorating for the event, to serving the food!.Justin Baumgartner will be in charge of creating a wonderful meal for the event. He is looking for volunteers on the day to help chop all the vegetables!.

Year-end 40th year extravaganza picnic: Friday June 1st. This year we will also be reaching out to Alumni to celebrate the event.

Recurring Fundrasing:

Fresh and Easy shopping: September 15th-December 31st, 2011. Coordinator Kathryn Leonard. For every $20 spent the PTO will receive $1. Please keep all your receipts. Tell all your family and friends.

Make sure to be registered with Safeway. Lisa Callarman will be available at the Mixer to hand out Safeway cards.

Also make sure that if you use eScrip or Amazon to login first to the PTO website. One is able to then click onto eScrip and Amazon. A percentage of sales will go to the PTO.

Box Tops for Education: Coordinator: Susan Duffield. Each is worth 10c. These can be found on many products at the grocery store.

Jamba Juice cards: available from Anne Elizabeth.

PTO also willing to rent out the shade structures. Will match any competitors rate!

Holiday Programme December 14th.

Satwant Khalsa is eager to talk about the history of the school over the last 40 years. The PTO was started as a parent run board in the 1970′s. He, himself was hired in 1980. We look forward to hearing more stories and possibly some trivia over the last 40 years of Khalsa.

Lead Teacher Presentation: Dawn Tapia, Primary 3rd Street Lead Teacher. Talks about the importance of observations. Come October parents will be able to observe their child in the classroom. It is important as it gives one an idea of how one’s child behaves in the classroom. One is encouraged to stay as long as possible. Dawn comapares it to being more like water then fire. To sit and observe.

It is important to sign up online for our newsletter. Contact any of the officers if necessary.

Almost 70 parents and 50 children showed up for our kickoff event for Khalsa’s 40th year. We look forward to your continued enthusiasm, and are quite proud of our community tonight.

A thanks to Dawn Tapia for her reminders about observing children in the classroom, and next time we’ll give Satwant some more time to expand on the history of the school!
